The ups and downs of dieting can create a “negative expectancy” or expecting to fail next time, which results in little or no patience for the process of losing weight. You already understand the health risks involved in obesity and the emotional toll that past failures have left behind. So it stands to reason why you would want to lose weight as fast as possible. Let’s look at what the experts say.

The Mayo Clinic recommends one to two pounds a week for long term weight loss. Anything faster than that may be due to water weight or other factors.

It’s time to face that a lack of patience for weight loss is a very short-sighted approach to getting your goals. What’s really going on here is that your perception is too narrow, you’re only thinking of the now. Maybe there’s a wedding coming up or a beach day where you’ll be around other people in a bathing suit. Or perhaps you tried on your favorite jeans and you can’t button them anymore or you see a candid photo someone took of you and you asked the question, “Is that really what I look like?” Truth be told, there’s a pressure on you right now to get this taken care of.

Now this is an okay place to start and follows one of two regular functions of motivation in the mind we call “Away From Pain.” Our brains recognize we are in pain and we want to get out of the pain so we are motivated to take action. The second function of motivation is called “Toward Pleasure” where we become keenly aware of what we want and start chasing after it. This motivation structure is more fun but also can also cause us to be blind to risks. The best approach is to use both Away From Pain and Toward Pleasure strategies so you have consistent little wins along the way.

The next problem you face when you feel the pressure to lose weight is you decide to turn up your internal intensity and do it 110%. You think, no pain, no gain and begin punishing yourself into submission. How long can anyone stand that kind of self-abuse? Add the stress of work, kids, paying bills, politics and forget it, you’re done. Your nervous system crashes and you just give up.

So what is the answer? Actually, you have to start with the right questions. There really are wrong questions and right questions.

Some examples of wrong questions are below.

“Why me?” Self pity can be tempting but it doesn’t get you what you actually want. It only makes you feel worse about yourself.

“Why can’t I be like her?” Comparing yourself to another person or worse resenting another person who has what you want implies you can’t have it, which is false. It also implies that person has that quality because of some magic ability rather than through practice. How does a musician get great? Are they born knowing how to play the piano?

“What’s wrong with me?” Nothing is wrong with you. You’re not broken. Your behaviors are not, I repeat, are NOT engrained into your personality. You have only noticed what habits and behaviors aren’t working but soon you can learn what will work, stop the shame cycle and start practicing new skills, habits and behaviors slowly and patiently.

Some examples of correct questions are below.

“What worked for me in the past?”

“What worked for (insert fit celebrity name here) ?”

“If I knew I wouldn’t fail, what do I really want?”

“What attitudes do I need to choose to have in order to succeed now?”

“Why do I want this now?”

So now that you have the right questions in mind, it’s time to seek the answers. You know now that instead of wanting the FASTEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT, you can want to know THE BEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT and how to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way.

The first thing to do is STOP DIETING. Yes, stop dieting. The popular fad diets can be harmful, sometimes extremely harmful to the body and just think about the motivation behind the people who create those diets. Could it be the billions of dollars spent on weight loss products each year in America? Diets simply don’t work.

As dangerous as obesity is, fad diets are not a safe alternative. Fad dieting sells a promise of dropping pounds quickly, but your body pays the price. The changes made during a fad diet are not sustainable lifestyle choices. When the diet is over, all the pounds that were lost usually pile back on quickly. These diets can also leave us fatigued and dehydrated as we starve our bodies in an attempt to rid ourselves of the extra weight.

When you set out to live a healthier life, it’s important to ensure that the changes you make are sustainable. Here are a few tips for successful, healthy weight loss.

1. Visualize your future body

Always see yourself as the YOU you want to be. Avoid focusing on the number of pounds you wish to lose as your emotions follow those thoughts. For a moment, focus on the problem, see all the weight you have to lose now. Picture all the excess weight on your body. Take a moment, let it hit you. How does that make you feel? Now, get an image of your future body. See yourself fit, a better version of yourself. Imagine all the benefits you get from having the body you want. The clothes you get to wear, the improved appearance, respect from your co-workers or peers, physical activity is easier, it’s more comfortable to travel and walk around, you could go dancing perhaps! There are endless benefits to you achieving your goal. Pause and take that in. Now, how do you feel? Notice there are ways to think and feel about yourself that make the process easier.

2. Eat your way to thinness

That’s right, eat. Here’s how it normally goes: You’re trying desperately to lose weight so you skip meals and go hungry. When it’s finally time to eat, you gorge yourself because your body is so weak and tired and your stomach has been growling for hours. This can wreck so many of the functions and processes in the body like insulin response and metabolism. You may lose some weight this way but then you plateau and the frustration of it causes you to eat more. It’s better to actually eat than to starve yourself into thinness. Get ahead of your habits by keeping great-tasting healthy food on hand like nuts, carrots, veggies and lots of water and herbal tea.

3. Take care of your body.

If you begin thinking of exercise as a treat, a reward, how do you think you would prioritize it? Or what if you knew you were going on a date with George Clooney in 4 months? How would you view exercise then? Exercise doesn’t have to be intimidating, it can be fun! Think of a child at play. Whether you get a gym membership, start running with a friend, or take that workout class you’ve always wanted to try. Find something that works for you. Find something fun! If you try something and don’t like it, on to the next! There are hundreds of ways to exercise and keep moving. Make time to exercise daily. Write it on your calendar and think of it as a reward or as recess from your daily life.

4. Take care of your mind.

A huge part of having a healthy body is having a healthy mind. Often we eat because we are stressed or bored. If you find yourself eating for reasons other than hunger, make a mental note. Notice your state of mind and what emotions you’re feeling. If you’re bored, try a new hobby. Find something that engages your mind and brings out the best in you. Surround yourself with people who are positive influences and focus on building a life you enjoy and can be proud of. This is exceptionally easier to do with hyposis for weight loss. With hypnosis, you can learn how to deal with emotions in a healthy way so you can focus on your goals.

If you are struggling to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way, hypnotherapy can be a very effective tool.
